Big Bluestem

Big bluestem is a tall, sod-forming perennial.  It does best on moist, well-drained soils.  Big bluestem is among the top prairie grasses for production and feed quality.  The forage is highly palatable and nutritious if taken prior to maturation.  It provides excellent summer pasture in areas with adequate moisture.  Stands will thin if grazed too closely, especially late in the season.  It may grow roots to a depth of over 10 feet and grows to heights of 4-6 feet.
