BMR Forage Sorghum

Forage sorghums are used for silage and winter grazing.  They typically go dormant during periods of drought and resume growth when adequate rainfall occurs.  They typically mature in 115-125 days.  Feed value is approximately 80-90% of corn silage.  Care must be taken when grazing forage sorghums, especially after frost, as high levels of prussic acid may cause poisoning in livestock.  Keep animals out of forage sorghum and do not feed greenchop for 10-14 days after a killing frost.

BMR Forage Sorghum contains the brown mid-rib gene to increase digestibility of the forage sorghum by over 40%.  BMR forage sorghum will give you silage equal in feed value to corn silage on 1/3 less water requirement.  Because of the lower lignin content, lodging can be a problem if the seed is planted at too heavy a seeding rate or harvest is delayed.  Seeding rates for BMR forage sorghum 4-6 lbs. per acre.
